| Under the fire regulations, if you employ more than five people you will require a suitable written emergency plan for your premises. This will need to be made accessible to employees and be readily available for inspection by the local fire service. The level of detail required in the plan will vary dependant on the size and complexity of your premises. |
| The plan should include the actions that you, your employees and other parties present on site, such as contractors or visitors, need to take in the event of a fire at your premises or any adjoining premises. Staff and other relevant individuals will need to be provided with instructions which will allow them to safely evacuate the building in the event of a fire occurring. All employees should receive adequate information and training about the risks in the premises. Fire marshals and others with specific responsibilities will require more thorough training. |
| Strategic Risk Management are able to assist you in the development of an emergency plan for your premises. Typically this will include: |
|
|
- Details of the fire warning arrangements in place
- Role and responsibilities of fire wardens and staff charged with key fire safety duties
- Procedures for liaising with the fire and other emergency services
- Actions employees should take in the event of a fire occurring
- Instructions for evacuating the premises including special arrangements for people identified as especially at risk, such as people with disabilities, members of the public and contractors
- Fire assembly points and evacuation checklists
- Designated escape routes
- Type, location and usage of the firefighting equipment on site
- Fire awareness training for employees
|
| If you have a larger or more complex business, then a drawing of the premises will be required showing: |
- Essential structural features – workplace layout, escape routes, doorways, walls, partitions, corridors, stairways, this includes any fire-resisting structure and self closing fire doors etc.
- Emergency lighting equipment and exit route signage
- Details of any automatic firefighting systems and sprinkler control valve
- Means and location of any firefighting equipment – fire extinguishers, hose reels and fire blankets
- The location of manually operated fire alarm call points and control equipment for the fire alarm
- The location of the electrical supply intake, the main water shut-off valve and the main gas shut-off valve
