The CRC Efficiency Scheme is a new, mandatory, energy saving and carbon emissions reduction scheme for the UK. It was originally proposed in 2007 and known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC). In October 2009 the government renamed this scheme the CRC Efficiency Scheme.
The scheme which has been designed to help the government keep its commitment to reduce UK greenhouse gas emissions, aims to help public and private sector organisations improve energy efficiency and save costs through reducing their energy bills. It is anticipated that these "cost savings" will exceed the cost of participating in the scheme which will start in April 2010.
You are required to participate if during the qualifying period (the calendar year of 2008), your organisation:
Had at least one half hourly meter settled on the half hourly market.
Consumed at least 6,000 MWh electricity (approx. £500,000) through all your half hourly meters
It is expected that around 20,000 organisations in the UK will be involved in the CRC Efficiency Scheme. The majority of these will be required to simply make an information disclosure and around 5,000 will actually qualify to participate fully.
All participating organisations and those making an Information Disclosure need to register on the Environment Agency web site between 1st April 2010 and 30th September 2010.
There will be financial penalties and publication of businesses who do not either register by the required date or who do not submit the required information for the scheme. Companies who place corporate social responsibility high on the agenda will be keen to avoid this negative publicity.
